TYPE
II DIABETES AND THE SUPER SIZING GENERATION Who is at risk of developing Type II diabetes mellitus? People who:
1. are obese (more than 20% above their ideal body weight) 2. have a relative with diabetes mellitus 3. belong
to a high-risk ethnic population (African-American, Native American, Hispanic, or Native Hawaiian) 4. have been diagnosed
with gestational diabetes or have delivered a baby weighing more than 9 lb. (4 kg) 5. have high blood pressure (140/90
or above) 6. have a high density lipoprotein cholesterol level less than or equal to 35 mg/dL 7. have had impaired
glucose tolerance or impaired fasting glucose on previous testing
Prescription medications can impair the body's
use of insulin, causing a condition known as secondary diabetes. These medications include treatments for high blood pressure,
drugs with hormonal activity and the anti-inflammation drug indomethacin. Several drugs that are used to treat anxiety and
depression also can impair glucose absorption. Check with your health care provider or pharmacist if you are in doubt.
What you can do to avoid Type II diabetes is quite simple in most cases, lose weight and increase your physical activity.
Well, it sounds simple--it is only two things that you have to do. After seeing your health care provider and confirming the
fact that you have pre-diabetes or Type II diabetes, you should then seek the council of a nutritionist. The nutritionist
can then set up a life-style plan that is fitted to your specific needs. The nutritionist will be able to guide you through
the various stages of a program that will allow you to reach your goals.
The benefits derived from a life-style
change should bring your weight down to a more ideal range, reduce your blood pressure and increase your HDLs (high density
lipoproteins). This in turn reduces the stress on organs like your heart, kidneys and liver.

WEIGHT MANAGEMENT
What to do??? HIGH CARBS - LOW FAT - LOW PROTEIN...? NO
CARBS - HIGH FAT - HIGH PROTEIN....? 1/3 CARBS - 1/3 FAT - 1/3 PROTEIN.....?
What is the right answer? Well, there is no right answer just as there is no right "DIET". It requires a life-style change, a change
that will help both you and your family to achieve health and wellness. This can only be done, without the yo-yo effect, by
treating each individual as an individual not as a number. There is no magic bullet, just a commitment to good health and
wellness.
A life-style change does not mean to starve, to become a gym nut, some strange diet that is all but
impossible to follow. It means EATING SOUND HEALTHY FOODS, and EXERCISE TO BURN OFF ANY EXTRA CALORIES YOU MAY TAKE IN. With
good planning in both why and how you will be a success. Life does not mean to do without, just to do WITH well chosen ingredients.
Everyone who knows me knows that I CAN COOK--and SO CAN YOU! Let me show you how to make the foods you love healthy
for you!
